ARIES

Aries Imager

ARIES consists of a NIR imager and a spectrograph. The imager is currently available.

Sensitivity

The sensitivity of ARIES in f/15 mode with 0.15” image quality and a 0.18” photometric aperture:-

Data provided by Craig Kulesa

Detector HgCdTe
Pixels across detector 1024×1024
Pixel size (microns) 18.5
Wavelength (microns) 1.1 - 2.5
Focal Ratio f/15 f/30
Plate scale (arcsec/mm) 2.11 1.06
Field (arcsec/pixel) 0.038 0.019
Full field (inscribed on detector) 40.0 arcsec 20.0 arcsec

Pixel Scale

Measured in May 2004 by comparing M3 with HST astrometry.

24.77812 pixels per arcsecond, r.m.s. fit over 1000 pixels is 0.5 pixels.

Filter Wheels

There are two filter wheels in parallel with an f/15, f/30 and pupil imaging optics.

Wheel 1

  1. 1.3 micron (Marcia Rieke ORIEL filter)
  2. 2.296 micron
  3. J
  4. Brackett-gamma (2.1702 microns)
  5. 1-2 micron low-pass
  6. 2.118 micron (bandwidth = 19.5 nm)
  7. 1.6433 micron (bandwidth = 45.1 nm - probably a warm value for this)
  8. (Freed/Close filter - smaller opening about 3/8 inch diameter)
  9. K
  10. H
  11. Ks

Wheel 2

  1. SDI
  2. ND - 5 magnitudes (100x)
  3. ND - 10 times?
